BRIEF HISTORY

Belarus is the country between East and West, the Baltics and the Black sea, part of the trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks”.

First settlements in Belarus were created on the banks of multiple rivers and lakes 100,000-35,000 years ago. The cradle of statehood in Belarus finds roots in Polotsk that was the first city to be mentioned in the chronicles in 862. It turned into an independent state - the Principality of Polotsk - and was prominent for its laws, education and architecture.

In the 13th century Belarus became the core element of the the Grand Duchy of Lithuania stretching from the Baltics to the Black Sea and covering modern territories of Belarus, Lithuania, biggest part of Ukraine and western Russia.

In 1569 in order to fight back Moscow expansion The Grand Duchy of Lithuania signed the treaty with the Crown of Poland and a new state was formed - the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. A civil war, though, led to the Partitions (1772, 1793, 1795) and the country was divided between Russia, Austria and Prussia.

It linked Belarus for almost two centuries with the Russian Empire when cultural and national revival started due to the rise of intellectual elite.

The beginning of the 20th century was marked by World War I and the Revolution in Russia. The Tsar of the Russian Empire was dethroned in 1917, Bolsheviks came to power which led to the formation of another country in 1922 - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

In 1939 World War II began in Europe and in 1941 Germany started the Great Patriotic War with the Soviet Union by invading Belarus. The country suffered the greatest horrors of war but created the biggest resistance movement in Europe. Right after the war the massive reconstruction started and the country managed to literally rise from the ashes.

After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Belarus began its history as an independent state and in 1994 the new Constitution was adopted as well as the first presidential election held.

Being in the centre of Europe, Belarus was integrated in the common course of history of the latter but managed to develop its own peculiarities which are worth of meticulous study. This is the country to discover.
